South Korea has solidified its economic standing on the global stage, recording the world’s second-largest current account surplus among major economies in the second quarter, according to President Lee Jae Myung. The surplus reached an impressive US$116.63 billion between April and June, placing South Korea just behind China, which achieved a surplus of US$193.72 billion, as per data from the International Monetary Fund accessed through the Bank of Korea.

President Lee emphasized that South Korea is transcending its traditional role of merely following advanced economies. The country’s surplus surpasses even the combined figures recorded by Germany and Japan, illustrating South Korea’s growing influence in shaping the global economic landscape.

Key to this economic success is the performance of South Korean companies, particularly in the semiconductor industry. These companies are pivotal in advancing artificial intelligence technologies, a sector rapidly gaining international traction.

In light of these achievements, President Lee urged for continued efforts to bolster the nation’s industrial competitiveness. He highlighted the importance of increasing South Korea’s potential economic growth rate to maintain and enhance its economic position globally.
