Peter Cullen, the iconic Canadian voice actor, has passed away at the age of 85. Renowned for his work as the voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, surrounded by family.
Born in Montreal, Cullen’s journey into the world of voice acting began with Canadian television and radio, eventually leading him to become a prominent figure in the industry. He first brought Optimus Prime to life in the 1984 Transformers animated series and continued to voice the character in seven Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, as well as in various spin-off projects. His portrayal of the noble leader of the Autobots became a defining role in his career.
Cullen also lent his voice to Eeyore, the beloved yet gloomy donkey from the Winnie the Pooh series. His contributions to The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous other TV shows, films, and video games solidified his status as a versatile and talented voice actor. Among his other memorable roles were KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT on Knight Rider, the unique clicking sounds of the Predator in the 1987 film, and the voice of King Kong in the 1976 remake.
Throughout his career, Cullen credited his older brother Larry, a former captain in the US Marine Corps, for influencing his portrayal of Optimus Prime. Larry’s advice to make Prime a strong yet non-aggressive hero helped shape the character’s enduring appeal. In recognition of his contributions, Cullen received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his work as Optimus Prime and was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
