Rydell made a significant mark in Hollywood with On Golden Pond, released in 1981. This film, which featured Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda, garnered 10 Academy Award nominations. It was a particularly special project for Henry Fonda, as it was his last film role and the one that finally earned him an Oscar. Katharine Hepburn also won an Oscar for her performance. Despite Rydell’s nomination for Best Director, the award went to Warren Beatty for Reds. On Golden Pond was not only a critical success but also a commercial one, earning over $119 million globally.
