South Korea Maintains Lower Tariffs on Taiwanese Fruit, Boosting Trade Until August

by admin477351

In a move to stabilize food prices, South Korea has decided to extend its preferential tariff program for Taiwanese fruit imports. This decision allows for reduced import duties on bananas, pineapples, and mangoes, which will now remain in effect until August 15. Initially, the tariff-relief measure was to end in June, but it has been prolonged to coincide with Taiwan’s peak mango export season.

The tariff reduction program, which lowers import duties from 30% to a mere 5%, was first introduced earlier this year. This extension is seen as a strategic effort to support Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture in boosting fruit exports by meeting the consumer demand in South Korea. The timing is particularly advantageous as it aligns with Taiwan’s mango harvest period, providing a window before South Korea’s domestic mango production fully meets local needs.

Officials from Taiwan have highlighted that this extended tariff relief will help in maintaining the strong flow of mango exports to South Korea, a key market for the fruit. The Ministry of Agriculture has committed to further enhancing the quality of Taiwanese mangoes through various initiatives. These include quality improvement programs and promotional campaigns aimed at increasing the fruit’s presence through collaborations with international retailers.

Despite the challenges faced this year, Taiwanese mango exports have remained robust, with South Korea continuing to be one of the primary destinations. The ongoing partnership between the two countries demonstrates a mutual benefit; Taiwan can effectively manage its fruit supply while South Korea benefits from the availability of high-quality produce at reduced costs.
