Vietnam has underscored its increasingly pivotal role in fostering collaboration between ASEAN and Russia, following the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit celebrating 35 years of dialogue. Vietnam’s Foreign Minister, Lê Hoài Trung, emphasized that the nation was instrumental in driving the summit’s success, advocating for ASEAN’s central position and supporting efforts to enhance the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.
The Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation, advocating for peaceful dispute resolution and adherence to international law. They put forward proposals to expand cooperation in vital sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These proposals align with the summit’s adoption of new frameworks designed to bolster ASEAN–Russia relations through 2030, positioning energy as a central element of this partnership.
Vietnam also announced its plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, illustrating its dedication to nurturing future regional cooperation. This initiative is part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to enhance the relationship between ASEAN and Russia, contributing to regional stability and opening up new avenues for economic growth and collaboration across Eurasia.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their talks focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in areas including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport. These discussions reflect a shared vision for deepening ties and exploring new opportunities for joint initiatives.
Vietnam’s active participation and the outcomes of the summit are seen as significant steps toward reinforcing ASEAN–Russia relations. By promoting regional stability and economic cooperation, Vietnam aims to create a foundation for sustained growth and partnership across the Eurasian region, showcasing its commitment to regional leadership and international collaboration.
