This initiative follows the parliamentary approval of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act, which will soon transfer investigative powers exclusively to the police, stripping the prosecution of this authority once the changes are implemented. The president highlighted that with increased authority should come heightened responsibility, as he warned against the dangers of power concentration leading to systemic issues.
President Lee’s call for reform also stemmed from recent public safety incidents that have cast doubt on police practices, notably the tragic case of a woman who went missing on Jeju Island and was later found dead. This incident has sparked public criticism and intensified scrutiny over police procedures and their accountability measures.
Lee stressed that the shift in responsibility necessitates a corresponding enhancement in police accountability to uphold public safety effectively. He reiterated the importance of reforming the current system to prevent future lapses and ensure that the police force can handle its newfound responsibilities without compromising public trust.
